People often associate Washington and the rest of the DC area with government activity. Such a fact is not surprising, as the Federal Government remains the largest single employer in the metropolis. Media also plays a huge role in this perception since much of the reports that they do about Washington are usually about government and politics.

In recent years, however, the DC area is reinventing itself. Washington and surrounding communities in Maryland and Virginia are now exerting effort in attracting private businesses to the region. The reason for this is their aim to have a diversified economy that is not completely dependent on government activity for sustenance.

So far, the effort to attract businesses in the DC area has worked. Adding to the already existing list of businesses operating from Washington are enterprises that are engaged in areas such as biotechnology, science and engineering, computers, research and media. In 2006, a business magazine recognized Washington as one of the top ten cities in the United States that are favorable for business expansion.

The demand for office space in the DC area increased tremendously over a significant period of time as businesses start to establish themselves. For example, more businesses are now looking for Dulles VA office space as compared to previous years. Businesses, government and non-government related entities all ask for a piece of office space in Washington and surrounding areas.

Fortunately, real estate developers in the DC area are able to cope up with the increasing demand. The development of Dulles VA office space and others in the DC area resulted in increased profit for real estate developers and salespeople. Aside from developing new office spaces, developers have also engaged in renovations, wherein old dilapidated inner areas of Washington, especially those close to key areas such as the United States Capitol and the White House, are being renewed in order to become great business locations.

With the increased influx of private businesses and demand for the likes of Dulles VA office space, Washington is clearly on its way towards a diversified economy. Sooner or later, Washington will be able to assert itself not just as a center of government activity but also as a hub for businesses. Even the planners of Washington during the 18th century would be proud to see how their city has transitioned into a diverse, multi-functional community.
